SB 2300: Special Purpose Schools

Senate Bill 2300, authored by Senator Joey Fillingane, updates and expands Mississippi’s charter school law to increase flexibility, transparency, and opportunity within the public education system with a specific emphasis on charter schools that meet a defined special purpose. 

The bill removes the cap on new charter schools, clarifies authorizer roles, and creates special purpose charter schools that can serve students with distinct educational needs. These changes can expand access to high-quality education options for families, particularly underserved students, while strengthening accountability through defined performance frameworks and transparency requirements. 

The bill also creates a pathway for special purpose schools within the traditional public school framework, ensuring multiple opportunities exist to meet the unique needs of individual communities.
