SB 2647: Apprenticeship program for barbers and cosmetologists

Senate Bill 2647, sponsored by Sen. Kevin Blackwell, would allow barbers, cosmetologists, estheticians, and manicurists to be eligible for a license by completing an apprenticeship program.

Currently, you are required to complete a minimum number of hours in a school. The apprenticeship program, which requires twice the number of hours as school, removes a potential barrier by providing an option for those who would like to or need to earn income while completing the necessary training for their trade. This is another pathway to a career in any of these fields.

Under the bill, you would be eligible for your license by completing the following apprenticeship programs:

– 3,000 hour program for a cosmetologist or barber

– 1,200 hour program for estheticians

– 700 hour program for a manicurist
