SB 2602: School District Reporting For Student Transfers

2602

Senate Bill 2602, sponsored by Sen. Dennis DeBar, would require each school district to report information concerning student transfers to the State Department of Education.

Mississippi’s current law allows student transfers with the mutual consent of both the student’s home district and the district they are attempting to transfer into.

Under this proposal, school districts would be required to report:

  • The criteria established for the approval or rejection of transfer requests
  • Any tuition or other fees imposed on students who transfer
  • The total capacity in each grade to accept transfer students
  • The number of transfer students accepted and rejected
  • Reasons for rejection

This will provide transparency in the student transfer process that is currently not available, and ultimately help more families find the right educational setting for their children.

Senate Bill 2602 died in committee on February 4. However, a similar bill, House Bill 1435, passed the House of Representatives and will now be considered by the Senate Education Committee. You can read that bill here.
