Support smart on crime reforms

that protect public safety and provide reabilitated offenders a chance at redemption.

Mississippi has the second highest incarceration rate in the world.  We put more people in prison than almost any other state or industrialized nation.

Our mounting prison crisis comes at a tremendous cost to taxpayers, but even more, is destructive to families and communities.

Mississippi sentencing laws should ensure the punishment fits the crime.  Courts' application of sentencing laws should protect against unfair sentencing disparities that result in some offenders receiving extremely harsh sentences and others facing little to no consequences.

Since 95% of prisoners will one day be released, it is important to clear hurdles that prevent successful reentry. Ability to find a job after release is the number one indicator of whether a person will avoid future scrapes with the law.

Mississippi's parole laws should provide a path for rehabilitated model inmates to be restored into their communities, while providing an opportunity for law enforcement, prison officials, and victims to be heard.

There is bipartisan support for meaningful criminal justice reforms in Mississippi.  77% favor investing in re-entry programs to equip prisoners for success upon release and 76% favor the possibility of parole for those exhibiting good behavior.
